This is What Advocacy Does: $8.3 Million

9/29/2015

The state Bond Commission meets on Sept. 29 to approve bonding to finance a number of projects, including $8.3 Million for "Urban bikeway, pedestrian connectivity, trails and alternative mobility programs."  This is what our advocacy does: it gets bike ped projects on the front burner.

Assuming it gets approved, the $8.3 million bond request will break out this way:
  • $ 5.1 million: Construction of a section of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail - Farmington
  • $ 1 million:  Bike and Pedestrian Trail Connections to the Putnam Bridge - Wethersfield and Glastonbury
  • $ 1.2 million:  Downtown West Commuting Corridor to establish a two-way, dedicated, and protected cycle track from western residential neighborhoods and SCSU to downtown New Haven
  • $ 1 million: Bike and pedestrian safety planning grants to assist communities in identify bike and pedestrian needs and develop recommendations to improve conditions
A separate bond request for $170 million to finance"Fix it First" road and bridge programs and the Local Transportation Capital Improvement Program may present additional opportunities to integrate complete streets designs for cyclists and pedestrians.

Bike Walk CT's advocacy work will continue to focus on those things, including how the bike ped safety planning grants will be awarded.
