BTW Pledge Update and Event News: Pledges Pass 500

5/14/2014

Picture
With less than 48 hours until Bike to Work Day begins, Bike Walk Connecticut sees more clear skies and less hesitation as CT residents continue to take the pledge to ride to work on May 16th.

The DCF is swiftly transforming into the iPhone of State Government organizations; having more pledges than all of the other Connecticut organizations combined. DEEP and Corrections hold their positions while the Department of Transportation is challenging the Department of Public Health for fourth place: it's the people who know how to stay healthy against the people who know how to stay in motion, so it'll be one tough battle.

Private sector pledges, which are still being led by small businesses, have seen some big changes in the last 48 hours with Traveler's Insurances suddenly jumping into third place. However, they may not be able to stay under the umbrella of the bronze medal for long since Yale - completely missing only days ago - showed up with nine pledges with more on the way.

West Hartford (which was recently designated a Bike Friendly Community) remains on top with 55 pledges while Waterbury and Hartford have 31 and 25 pledges, respectively. But momentum is building in the lower ranks: Stamford has suddenly found itself in the top ten with 13 pledges. But Manchester, Cheshire and Simsbury may not stand for that and are only a few pledges shy of collectively hurling 'The City that Works' into 'The City that Isn't In the Top Ten.'

In Other News:

  • The Farmington Event is now being held on Monday, May 19th from 6:30a.m. to 9:00a.m. Hosted by UConn Health, the event will be held at 263 Farmington Avenue. Farmington bicycle commuters are still encouraged to take the pledge if they are riding to work on Bike to Work Day. The city and the bike advocates who live in Farmington also need to take a bow as their city was designated a Bike Friendly Community along with West Hartford.

  • Stamford's Downtown Special Services District has confirmed that the Bike to Work Day event on Friday, May 16th at Veterans Park will feature tents to shield guests from whatever WTNH's Gil Simmons says may come from the sky that day.

  • Rumors abound on events in cities like Bridgeport and elsewhere. Remember: if you are holding a Bike to Work Day event be sure to register the event with Bike Walk CT so we can give you some resources and update our event listing. And of course, if you live in Connecticut and want to participate in National Bike to Work Day, be sure to take the pledge and be counted, and if you already have taken the pledge, forward the link to somebody who hasn't!
