Bike Walk Connecticut News
2022 Legislative Session In Progress - Support S.B. 4 Today Since the start of the legislative session we've been tracking several bills that are important to improving biking, walking, transportation and our environment for our neighborhoods, communities and state. The legislative session will run through May 4th. Now is the time to MOVE and BE HEARD! Legislators need to hear from us -- the Connecticut bike/walk community. Click here to find your legislator. S.B. 4 AN ACT CONCERNING THE CONNECTICUT CLEAN AIR ACT S.B. 4 is a large bill focused on cutting greenhouse gas emissions from our transportation system and greatly improving air quality, especially in the cities and neighborhoods that suffer the most from the dirty air created by our over-reliance on fossil-fuel based cars, trucks, busses and commercial vehicles. This is reason enough to support the bill but we're particularly in favor of the provisions to expand the tax rebate program for EVs and adding e-bikes to the tax rebate program. E-bikes are emerging as an important local and micro-mobility solution for anyone seeking to lower transportation costs or for low or middle-income communities that lack access to reliable public transit. The more e-bikes become an option the more demand there will be for networks of safe bike infrastructure. Please contact members of the Transportation Committee and Environment Committee and ask them to support S.B. 4. Click here for a list of Committee members. ![]() BWCT Strava Community

Olmsted 200 in 2022 2022 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederick Law Olmsted, social reformer and founder of American landscape architecture. BWCT will join the National Association for Olmsted Parks, partners, friends and the public in exploring Olmsted’s living legacy. Olmsted was born in Harford and spent much of his youth in communities across CT. In addition to Central Park and others across the country, he designed CT parks like Walnut Hill (New Britain), Seaside Park (Bridgeport), and Keney Park (Hartford). BWCT will hold a tour to celebrate Olmsted 200 in 2022 - stay tuned for more ways to get involved! Bike Safety Curriculum Bike Walk Connecticut has developed a bike safety curriculum targeted to the fourth grade, piloted in South Windsor in 2010 and now part of their established curriculum. With the Capital Region Council of Governments (CRCOG), educators can learn about how to teach the basics of riding a bicycle safely and confidently to elementary grade students. The 6-hour workshop is led by League Cycling Instructors certified by the League of American Bicyclists. The workshops are funded through the CT Department of Public Health (DPH)'s Active Transportation component of their State Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) grant. A maximum of 8 workshop sessions will be awarded and applications were submitted in November. Above are photos from the Himes Bikes Across CT event, featuring Cheshire Town Councilor and BWCT board member Jim Jinks, State Representative (Fairfield) Cristin McCarthy Vahey, and Kate Rozen.
