Pedestrian and Cyclist Deaths in CT
Nationally, traffic fatalities of all kinds are up substantially in the wake of the pandemic (10.5% from 2020 to 2021) and the United States is doing much, much worse than other high-income countries. Connecticut falls in the middle of the nation with 1.57 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 people. High fatality rates are commonly attributed to dangerous street design, the increase in oversized vehicles, and vehicle speed.
Kerri Ana Provost uses crash data from UConn’s Connecticut Crash Repository to map pedestrian and bicyclist deaths on Connecticut. Note that there can be a lag between when a crash occurs and when the police report is filed.
