BTW Pledge Update: One in Five Participants Are First Time Bicycle Commuters

5/8/2014

Bike to Work Day pledges have surpassed 350 - easily passing last year's numbers eight days before the event but still far from our goal. So far, the data shows about 21% of those who have taken the Bike to Work Day Pledge will be taking their very first ride to work on National Bike to Work Day. Close to half of all pledges ride to work occasionally while the remainder ride to work very frequently.

Newcomers to bicycle commuting can find BIke to Work tips here and all pledges are encouraged to share the link to the Bike to Work Day pledge with their Connecticut friends and neighbors so they'll have more company on the roads - and at the Bike to Work Day events - on May 16th.

In other news:

  • Stamford's condition has been upgraded from 'completely pitiful' to 'rather embarrassing' as the number of pledges rises from one to five in the past 24 hours. Reports from the ground confirm the Bike to Work Day event on May 16 at Veterans Park at 7:30 is coming together and will feature some very special guests.
  • We are awaiting a surge from Simsbury, which is in the same category as Stamford as only six from Simsbury have taken the pledge so far. The numbers are expected to change soon as the town features not one but two BTW Day events: the morning event is held at Ironhorse Boulevard and begins at 6:30 on May 16th while the evening event, Bike to Work Day Happy Hour, is held at the Red Stone Pub from 5:00 to 7:00pm.
  • West Hartford - which is having a Bike to Work Day event at the REI parking lot at 71 Raymond Road on May 16 at 7:30 - continues to lead but has had no new pledges over the same period. With other towns surging, it may well be possible their stranglehold on first place may end.
  • New Bike to Work Day events are starting up across the state, with the updated list of Bike to Work Day events found here. Anyone wishing to host their own BTW Day event cane easily do so by visiting BikeWalkCT's Bike to Work Day Event registration page.
