Under the threat of rain, pledges continue to flow in as citizens around the state realize that Connecticut towns are all much better places to live than rain-soaked - and cycle friendly - cities like London and Portland. As things get down to the wire with planning, Bike Walk Connecticut is pleased to report the following events - and once again thanks the event hosts for tirelessly working to make it all come together. Bridgeport - Mayor Bill Finch will be hosting a Bike to Work Day event at 8:30a.m. The meeting place is at Beardsley Park, at the entrance of the Beardsley Zoo parking lot at 1875 Noble Avenue. The event is open to the public and features a bike ride from the park to the government center at 999 Broad Street, which is less than three miles away. For information contact Jacob Robison at jacob.robison@bridgeportct.gov Milford - Hosted by Tony's Bikes (108 Broad Street) this free and open to the public event features breakfast and is taking place from 7:30 to 9:30a.m. Bike inspections by Tony's Bikes' staff will be available - and those who show up by car will not be turned away from the fun. For information call Mike at 203-878-5380. New Britain - The Bike to Work Day event at Central Park (corner of Main St. and West Main St.)from 7:00a.m. to 9:00a.m. will have some extra significance - and we're not talking about the breakfast: Last night, Mayor Erin Stewart and the City Council passed a resolution to make New Britain a League of American Bicyclists designated Bicycle Friendly Community. The designation seemed inevitable as last year's New Britain Bike to Work Day event had in excess of 40 riders take part - and that number is expected to be surpassed! New Haven - While the Bike to Work Day Event hosted by Elm City Cyclists and Devils Gear Bike Shop has been on our calendar since before bicycles were invented, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro will be greeting cyclists and will be speaking on safe routes to school. Breakfast will be provided by Elm City Market, while CT Transit, Street Smarts and others are expected to attend the event. For information contact Bobbie Pilette at pilette@sbcglobal.com New London - JUST IN! - Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio will be leading a ride Friday, May 16th, at 8:00 a.m. from his New London home at 777 Ocean Avenue. Riders are encouraged to begin gathering at 7:45a.m. and the press is invited to join before, during, or at City Hall at the end of the ride. New London has recently completed restriping the bicycle lanes on Montauk Avenue and expects to install new bicycle racks in front of City Hall and other downtown locations throughout the next few months. Last Minute Bike to Work Day Resources:
There's still time; take the Bike to Work Pledge Now! With less than 48 hours until Bike to Work Day begins, Bike Walk Connecticut sees more clear skies and less hesitation as CT residents continue to take the pledge to ride to work on May 16th. The DCF is swiftly transforming into the iPhone of State Government organizations; having more pledges than all of the other Connecticut organizations combined. DEEP and Corrections hold their positions while the Department of Transportation is challenging the Department of Public Health for fourth place: it's the people who know how to stay healthy against the people who know how to stay in motion, so it'll be one tough battle. Private sector pledges, which are still being led by small businesses, have seen some big changes in the last 48 hours with Traveler's Insurances suddenly jumping into third place. However, they may not be able to stay under the umbrella of the bronze medal for long since Yale - completely missing only days ago - showed up with nine pledges with more on the way. West Hartford (which was recently designated a Bike Friendly Community) remains on top with 55 pledges while Waterbury and Hartford have 31 and 25 pledges, respectively. But momentum is building in the lower ranks: Stamford has suddenly found itself in the top ten with 13 pledges. But Manchester, Cheshire and Simsbury may not stand for that and are only a few pledges shy of collectively hurling 'The City that Works' into 'The City that Isn't In the Top Ten.' In Other News:

I wanted to be sure that all Connecticut residents are aware that this is Bike to Work Week, and that Friday, May 16, is National Bike to Work Day. Bicycle commuting is on the rise statewide and nationwide, and how we get from one place to another matters a great deal. Riding improves health and saves money for the rider, at the same time that it reduces traffic for the motorist. More bicycle commuters is a win all around for the state. Read the full letter in the Hartford Courant here. As we close in on Bike to Work Day and watch Connecticut residents continue to take the pledge to ride to work, Hearst Papers and Bike Walk Connecticut want to see how you dress for your ride. Cathy Zuraw, photo editor of Hearst Connecticut Newspapers, wants to take photos of cyclists tomorrow (Thursday, May 15). Cyclists who have taken the pledge to bike to work are encouraged to contact her at 203-330-6498 or via email at czuraw@ctpost.com as soon as possible. Additionally, from now through Bike to Work Day, Connecticut bicycle commuters are encouraged to Tweet pictures of themselves in their cycling attire, no matter how fashionable, using the hashtag #biketoworkct. Whether you wear a suit, a dress or shorts with a Los Pollos Hermanos T-shirt - we want to see you! |
