- Submitted by MaryEllen Thibodeau Go to your calendar right now (really, right now) and reserve April 27 for Bike Walk Connecticut's 2013 Bike Walk Summit which will be held at Yale University in New Haven. The summit will run from approximately 9-2:30 and will be followed by an optional bike ride or walking tour and happy hour. Join others from around Connecticut to learn from experts, state and local officials and fellow advocates how to make Connecticut a better place to walk and bike. We’ll keep you posted on program details and let you know when registration opens. - Submitted by MaryEllen Thibodeau Join Bike Walk Connecticut Executive Director Kelly Kennedy at the 13th Annual Nation Bike Summit, which will be held in Washington, DC on march 4-6, 2013. For the past three years, the Connecticut delegation has numbered about 10-12, which was a big enough group for then Congressman and now Senator Chris Murphy to remark that the group was the largest that had visited him to ask for his support. Let’s make sure we have an even bigger group in his office this year!
To get more information about the Summit and to register, go to www.bikeleague.org. Bike shops who are members of the NBDA should ask NBDA about scholarships. Others interested in keeping costs to a minimum can take advantage of home stays, carpooling or using Amtrak or bus. The cost of the Summit includes a seated dinner and lunch as well as two continental breakfasts and a cocktail reception, covering almost all meals during your stay.
Washington has become a very bike friendly place and there is easy access to bike rental facilities. The wrap-up for the Summit is an optional bike ride to Capitol Hill on March 7. Legislation passed in 2009 established a Connecticut Bicycle Advisory Board, which reports annually to the Governor, Commissioner of Transportation, and Co-Chairs of the Transportation Committee of the Legislature. From the cover letter to the report:
Credit: Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition Connecticut's 2013 legislative session opened on January 9. It's early in the session, but Bike Walk Connecticut is aware of one bill in particular that has a lot of people talking. Proposed Senate Bill 103 would amend Conn. Gen. Stat. §14-286b to require cyclists to ride single file to allow motorists to safely pass and give cyclists the 3-foot buffer that current law requires. Bike Walk Connecticut appreciates the safety sentiment behind the proposed bill. However, subsection (b) of Conn. Gen. Stat. §14-286b already provides that “Persons riding two abreast … shall not impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic …” Accordingly, rather than amend current law, Bike Walk Connecticut would prefer that Connecticut re-commit to and enforce a vigorous Share the Road campaign to promote the legal, safe and courteous use of the roads by all users. |
