About Us

Our Mission
Our mission is to change the culture of transportation through advocacy and education to make bicycling and walking safe, feasible and attractive for a healthier, cleaner Connecticut.

Our History:  From CCBA to Bike Walk Connecticut
Since 2000, an association of agencies and individuals known as the Central Connecticut Bicycle Alliance has operated a Bike to Work program in the Central Connecticut region. After five years of growth, the time was right to create a formal organization that could can keep the Bike to Work program vital and take it to the next level. In addition, that plan was for the CCBA to become an advocate for bike-friendly facilities and policies in Central Connecticut that will benefit all bicyclists, both recreational riders and commuters, and become an advocate for all cyclists in Central Connecticut.

The CCBA received 501(C)(3) status in January 2006.  In April 2010, the Central Connecticut Bicycle Alliance changed its name  to Bike Walk Connecticut.

Our Achievements
Some of our achievements include:
  • Bicycling Advocacy.  Bike Walk Connecticut is an effective advocate in state and local governmnet.  Most recently, our advocacy culminated in the passage of legislation requiring motorists to provide a safe distance of at least three feet when overtaking a cyclist.
  • The Bike Everywhere Program.  Launched in 2008, the Bike Everywhere program encourages Central Connecticut residents to bike to their favorite destination instead of driving.  CCBA has sponsored National Bike Week, monthly Bike to Work Events in downtown Hartford and neighboring towns, biking to fun destinations, and instructional clinics.
  • Discover Hartford Tour.  Bike Walk Connecticut organized dozens of  volunteers and more than 1000 participants to bike and walk through Hartford’s many neighborhoods.
  • Community Outreach.  In 2010 CCBA gave helmets given to children at the Hispanic Health Council Fair in Hartford, organized valet parking of over 200 bikes at Celebrate West Hartford, and raffled off a bike for the Bike Everywhere program.
  • Website and e-Newsletter:  Our new website and our twice monthly email newsletter keep the bike-walking community informed about everything related to cycling in Central Connecticut.
