The New England Bike Walk Summit takes place this Friday—October 4 in Providence.
The Summit will have a variety of sessions of interest for all stakeholders—agency personnel, grassroots advocates, professionals in private practice and retailers. The Enfield Clean Energy Committee will hold a bike tour of solar installations in the community on Saturday, October 5 at 1 p.m. The tour will allow homeowners, businesses and educators that are interested in an up-close look at homes with solar energy systems to explore what others are doing.
The tour is open to everyone and will start at Enfield Public Library on Middle Road. The 14-mile bicycle ride will cover four homes with solar electricity, solar hot water, geothermal, composting and other features. It will end at the Weymouth Road Fire Station to see the solar electric system there. Participants are asked to pre-register by emailing melissae@earthlink.net, and to arrive at the library a few minutes before 1 p.m. with bike and helmet. Capital City Parks Master Plan will hold its second public meeting—Park Concepts & Connectivity on Wednesday, October 9 from 6-8 p.m.
Hartford's Parks and Open Space System Plan will help envision and plan the Capital City's next generation of open space, recreation, and connectivity. The meeting will be held at the Hartford Public Library, 500 Main Street, in the Center for Contemporary Culture Room. Free parking is available after 6 p.m. at the Arch Street Garage. For more information, visit http://projects.sasaki.com/hartfordparks/my-hartford Do to the loss of a Con Edison feeder that supplies the overhead wires that power Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line, there will be a limited bus/train service for the line, which started this morning and will continue until further notice.
Metro-North reports it is working with Con Edison to try to establish alternative power sources to serve the New Haven Line. The service plan can accommodate approximately 33% of the regular ridership on the New Haven Line. Therefore, Metro-North stated: • Customer to stay home or seek alternate service • New Haven Line tickets will be cross-honored on the Harlem Line • Customers should expect crowded conditions and should listen for announcements at their station • Bus service will be provided on the Waterbury Branch and limited shuttle train service will operate on the Danbury and New Canaan Branches. In regards to lines to and from Grand Central, the following was announced: AM Peak Service To Grand Central From New Haven to Stamford train service will be provided every 20-30 minutes and will connect with: • Limited diesel train service from Stamford operating directly to Harlem-125th Street and Grand Central Terminal · Limited local train service every 20-30 minutes from Stamford through Rye Stations; connecting with express bus service to White Plains Station for Harlem Line train service to Grand Central From Harrison to Grand Central Terminal service will be provided as follows: · Limited local train service every 20-30 minutes from Harrison through New Rochelle Stations and operating directly to Fordham, Harlem-125th Street and Grand Central Terminal • Bus Service from Pelham and Mount Vernon East to Mount Vernon West for Harlem Line train service From Grand Central Limited diesel train service will be provided every 30-40 minutes from GCT and making all local stops to Stamford; with hourly connections at Stamford for train service to New Haven. The event takes place at East Hartford Town Hall from 6:30-8:30 a.m. Food and beverages will be provided. This event will give those who bike and walk or like biking and walking to stop by and learn about this commuting method and also the opportunity to socialize with like-minded individuals. The Connecticut Children's Injury Prevention Center received a check for $175,520 at Discover Hartford Bicycle Tour on September 21, in support of the Kohl's Road Safety Campaign.

Road-related injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults,” said Garry Lapidus, Director of the Injury Prevention Center at Connecticut Children’s. “The kick-off of the Kohl's Road Safety Campaign by Connecticut Children's Medical Center at the Discover Hartford Bicycle Tour highlights the importance of keeping families and children safe on our Connecticut roads.” American Trails will hold a webinar tomorrow (September 25) titled "Introduction to Trail Maintenance Management. This is Part 1 of a 3 part series of webinars on Trail Maintenance. The webinar will present ideas on how to improve your trail management plan (if you already have one in place), or if you are considering developing one, you will get the information you need to make good decisions on how to move forward with your plan. According to the American Community Survey (ACS), in 2012 about .64% of commutes to work were made by bicycle, which is an increase of almost 10% since 2011. The survey found there were 864,883 bike commuters in the U.S. in 2012.
The data shows the total number of women bike commuters in 2012 grew to 236,067, which is an almost 11% increase from 2011. Women commuting by bike has grown by 58.8% since 2006. Connecticut DEEP is holding a community meeting tomorrow (September 25) to update residents on improvements to Sunrise State Park in Moodus.
DEEP staff, along with State Senator Art Linares, State Representative Melissa Ziobron, and First Selectman Mark Walter are seeking feedback from the community on what local residents would like see happen at Sunrise State Park. Alternatives being considered include preserving the property in its natural state for nature trails and passive recreation, or issuing a Request for Proposals to see what concepts private entities offer for the future use of the park. The Shoreline Greenway Trail will hold Trailblazer's 2nd Annual Run the Gauntlet on Sunday, September 29, 2013. This run is a fun, 5K obstacle race that will benefit the Trail. Participants will face 14 obstacles—tires, hay bales, high walls, water, cargo nets and more—all while running 3.1 miles along the course at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, CT.
